CAMP BASICS

Girls Rock Camp Saskatoon (GRCS) is a week-long summer program for youth ages 8-14, where campers learn an instrument, form a band, and write a song to be performed at a showcase at the end of the week. In addition to technical training, campers take part in a number of music and non-music workshops centred on creativity and confidence-building, such as songwriting, image & identity, zine-making, screenprinting, and more. Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible TO ATTEND camp?

GRCS encourages girls and under-represented youth from all backgrounds to apply for camp. We welcomes applications from cisgender girls, trans, two-spirit, and gender expansive youth.

Youth need to be the appropriate age (between 8 - 14) as of the first day of the camp they are applying for.

Campers that have attended 2 years in a row or more will receive lower priority during the selection process.

How much does it cost to register?

Registration fees are $400 and payment is due from successful applicants as directed at time of acceptance. However, cost is never a barrier for youth to attend camp.  Financial assistance is available in a variety of ways, from external funding, to payment plans, to partial and full scholarships. The registration committee is happy to work with parents and guardians to find the right fit for each accepted camper!

How are youth selected for camp?

GRCS values diversity, and selects campers with this in mind. Our applicant-review committee performs a delicate balancing act of creating a demographic of campers that represent a broad array of ages, instrument selections, ethnic and gender identities, and home addresses.

Do campers need to be present for the whole camp?

Yes! Because the week of camp is so short and there is so much to learn and so much fun to be had, we ask that each camper be able to fully attend each day of camp. This includes the Saturday matinee showcase concert.

Do campers need to have any previous musical experience?

No previous musical experience is required to take part in GRCS! Youth with musical experience are also encouraged to attend though - all skill levels are welcome!

Do campers need to provide their own musical instrument?

No. Instruments will be provided for all campers for the week of camp. Campers should indicate their instrument preference during registration, and every effort will be made to accommodate their first choice. Instruments loaned by GRCS cannot be taken home during the week of camp.

Will lunch be provided?

GRCS will provide lunch to all campers, as well as a morning and afternoon snack. Our food coordinator will take into account the needs of youth who have dietary restrictions and/or allergies.

My child was in Girls Rock Camp in previous years, can we apply for GRCS?

Of course! But please note that we cannot guarantee them a spot -we try to strike a balance of new and returning campers. Campers that have attended 2 years in a row or more will receive lower priority during the selection process. Campers who are age 14 may receive higher priority than those much younger, as it will be the last year they are eligible for camp.
